Lake Tahoe Ski Resort Opening Dates for the 2026–27 Season

It may still be summer in Lake Tahoe, but ski season officially has dates on the calendar.

Northstar California and Palisades Tahoe have announced their opening days for the 2026–27 ski season, and around here, that's usually when winter starts feeling a little less far away.

Northstar is planning to kick things off on November 20, followed by Palisades Tahoe on November 25. Other mountains around the lake are beginning to release plans too, while several are still waiting to make things official.

Whether you're already planning your first ski weekend or just curious when you'll be able to get back on the mountain, we're keeping track of the Lake Tahoe ski resort opening dates for 2026–27 right here. We'll continue updating this guide as more dates are announced.

When Does Ski Season Start in Lake Tahoe?

Ski season in Lake Tahoe typically starts in November, with some resorts opening before Thanksgiving and others following in December.

Exactly when each mountain opens depends on early-season snowfall, temperatures, snowmaking and mountain conditions. Even an officially announced opening day can change if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate.

That's especially important if you're planning an early-season ski trip. Opening day doesn't necessarily mean the entire mountain will be open, and available terrain can vary considerably from one resort to another.

Local Tip: If skiing is the main reason for your trip, we usually recommend checking the resort's mountain report a few days before you arrive. Opening weekend can be a lot of fun, but waiting a little longer in the season often means more terrain, more lifts and a better chance of getting the full Tahoe ski experience.

Palisades Tahoe Opening Day 2026

Palisades Tahoe is scheduled to open for the 2026–27 ski season on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, just in time for Thanksgiving weekend.

If you asked us where we'd send someone looking for the quintessential big-mountain Tahoe experience, Palisades would be high on the list. Between Palisades and Alpine, there's an enormous amount of terrain to explore once the season is fully underway, with everything from beginner areas to terrain that will challenge even experienced skiers.

If you're staying in Olympic Valley, Alpine Meadows or Tahoe City, Palisades is especially convenient. Truckee can also make a great home base if you want easy access to more than one mountain during your trip.

One thing we always tell visitors: figure out your parking plan before you head to the mountain. Palisades has made significant changes to parking in recent seasons, and knowing what to expect ahead of time can make your ski morning a whole lot easier.

Northstar Opening Day 2026

Northstar California is scheduled to open on Friday, November 20, 2026, making it one of the first major Tahoe ski resorts planning to open for the season.

Northstar is one of our favorite recommendations for families and groups with different skiing abilities. The mountain has plenty for experienced skiers, but its groomed terrain, ski school and Village make it particularly easy to build a full ski day around a group that doesn't necessarily want to do the exact same thing.

It's also one of the easiest mountains to plan around if you're staying in Northstar, Truckee, Kings Beach or Tahoe Vista.

If you're staying in a Northstar vacation rental, the Village and mountain can feel like part of the vacation rather than somewhere you have to drive to every morning.

If you're driving in for the day, though, it's worth knowing how Northstar's parking works before you arrive.

Before you head up: Read our Northstar Parking Guide.

Sugar Bowl Resort

Sugar Bowl is currently projected to open December 4, 2026.

Sugar Bowl is one we'd especially recommend if you're staying in Truckee or near Donner Summit. It has a distinctly different feel from some of Tahoe's larger destination resorts, with plenty of challenging terrain, beautiful views and a little bit of that old-school Sierra ski culture still intact.

It's also easy to pair with a Truckee stay if skiing is the priority but you still want restaurants, breweries and everything else downtown Truckee has to offer once you're off the mountain.

Boreal Mountain

Boreal Mountain is currently projected to open November 27, 2026.

Sitting right off I-80 on Donner Summit, Boreal is easy to overlook when you're comparing Tahoe's bigger resorts, but it's one we'd keep on your radar, especially if you're staying in Truckee.

One of the things that sets Boreal apart is night skiing and riding. When the sun goes down, you don't necessarily have to call it a ski day. It's a fun option if you want to spend the morning exploring Truckee, arrive in Tahoe later in the day or simply squeeze a few more runs into your trip.

Boreal is also known for its terrain parks and approachable learning terrain, making it a completely different experience from a full day at one of Tahoe's larger mountains.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is currently projected to open November 20, 2026.

Technically you're crossing into Nevada for this one, but Mt. Rose is absolutely worth including in a North Lake Tahoe ski trip.

At 8,260 feet, Mt. Rose has the highest base elevation of any Tahoe-area ski resort. But one of our favorite things about skiing here is the scenery. From different sides of the mountain, you can catch beautiful views toward Lake Tahoe and across the Washoe Valley, which sits thousands of feet below the Slide Bowl side of the mountain.

It's particularly convenient from Incline Village and the northeast side of the lake. Experienced skiers will know Mt. Rose for The Chutes, while the mountain also offers plenty of beginner and intermediate terrain if steep isn't your thing.

Diamond Peak Ski Resort

Diamond Peak is currently projected to open December 18, 2026.

If you've ever skied Diamond Peak on a clear Tahoe day, you probably understand why we keep recommending it.

The mountain isn't as large as Palisades or Northstar, but those views over Lake Tahoe are hard to beat. Its location in Incline Village also makes it a convenient option if you're staying around Kings Beach or Tahoe Vista and want to experience a different mountain for the day.

Donner Ski Ranch

Donner Ski Ranch is currently projected to open December 11, 2026.

Donner Ski Ranch is one of those places that reminds you what skiing in Tahoe used to feel like.

Located on Donner Summit across from Sugar Bowl, it's smaller, relaxed and refreshingly straightforward. If your idea of a good ski day involves spending more time skiing and less time navigating a huge resort village, this is one we'd keep in mind.

Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort

Tahoe Donner Downhill is currently projected to open December 12, 2026.

For families with young kids or anyone learning to ski, Tahoe Donner Downhill deserves more attention than it gets.

It's a small neighborhood ski hill rather than a destination resort, and that's part of its appeal. The mountain is designed with beginners and families in mind, making it a much less intimidating place to spend those first days on skis.

If you're staying in Tahoe Donner, it's especially convenient and makes an easy first ski day before venturing out to one of the larger mountains.

Granlibakken Ski & Sled Hill

Granlibakken has not yet announced an opening date for the 2026–27 season.

This is definitely not where we'd send you for a huge ski day, but that's not really the point.

Granlibakken's historic ski hill near Tahoe City is a fun option for beginners and families who want a much smaller, more approachable introduction to skiing. And you don't have to ski to enjoy it. Granlibakken also has a sledding hill and dedicated snow play area, making it a great option when you've got kids who would rather spend the afternoon playing in the snow.

If you're staying around Tahoe City and want an easy snow day without committing to one of the major resorts, this is one of those little local spots that's worth knowing about.

Heavenly Mountain Resort

Heavenly is targeting Friday, November 20, 2026, for opening day.

Heavenly is on the South Shore, so it isn't a mountain we'd normally recommend for a day trip if you're staying in North Lake Tahoe or Truckee. But no complete guide to Lake Tahoe ski resort opening dates would feel right without it.

With terrain spanning California and Nevada and some spectacular views over Lake Tahoe, Heavenly remains one of the area's major destination ski resorts.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort

Kirkwood is targeting Friday, December 4, 2026, for the start of its 2026–27 ski season.

Kirkwood sits south of Lake Tahoe and is known for big snowfall, challenging terrain and a much more mountain-focused atmosphere than some of the larger village-style resorts.

It's a long drive from North Lake Tahoe, so we'd generally recommend choosing Kirkwood when you're already staying closer to South Lake Tahoe rather than trying to make it a day trip from Truckee.

Sierra-at-Tahoe

Sierra-at-Tahoe is currently projected to open December 26, 2026.

Located southwest of South Lake Tahoe, Sierra-at-Tahoe has long been a favorite among locals on the South Shore. It's another resort that's outside our usual North Lake Tahoe orbit, but it's worth including if you're comparing ski areas around the entire lake.

What's Happening at Homewood Mountain Resort?

If you've been wondering whether Homewood Mountain Resort will be open for the 2026–27 ski season, there's finally some good news: Homewood is planning to welcome skiers and riders back to the West Shore this winter. An official opening day has not yet been announced.

And this won't be quite the same Homewood longtime visitors remember.

Construction is underway on a new 8-passenger gondola that will replace the historic Madden Chair and carry guests from the North Base to the future Mid-Mountain Lodge area. Homewood's current goal is to have the gondola ready for the 2026–27 winter season.

The project is also designed to move beginner terrain roughly 1,000 feet higher on the mountain, giving new skiers and riders access to higher-elevation snow and those lake views Homewood is famous for. Longer-term plans include expanded snowmaking, a new high-speed quad replacing Ellis Chair, a new learn-to-ski lift and additional skier services.

Perhaps the biggest question surrounding Homewood in recent years has been whether it would remain accessible to the public. According to the resort's current plans, Homewood will remain a public ski resort, with daily lift tickets, season passes and public amenities remaining part of its future. In fact, 2026–27 season passes are already on sale.

There's still a lot changing on the West Shore, and we expect more details as winter gets closer. We'll update this guide as soon as Homewood announces its official 2026–27 opening day.

Planning a Lake Tahoe Ski Trip

One of the best things about skiing North Lake Tahoe and Truckee is that you don't necessarily have to choose one mountain for your entire vacation.

Stay in Truckee and you can put Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Boreal and Palisades within reach. Base yourself in Tahoe City and you have convenient access to Palisades while still being able to explore the North Shore. Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista work especially well for Northstar, while Alpine Meadows and Olympic Valley put you right near Palisades.

You can also browse our North Lake Tahoe and Truckee vacation rentals to find a home base for the 2026–27 ski season.

Make Tahoe Your Home Base This Ski Season

If a few ski weekends never feel like enough, a Lake Tahoe ski lease gives you a home base for the season without having to pack up the car every Friday night.

Our seasonal ski leases are available throughout North Lake Tahoe and Truckee, putting you within easy reach of mountains like Palisades Tahoe, Northstar, Sugar Bowl and Boreal. Instead of planning a new trip every time the forecast looks good, you can head to Tahoe knowing your winter home is already waiting for you.

It's an especially good option for Bay Area skiers who know they'll be making the drive regularly throughout the season.
