There are few things better than waking up to fresh snow in Tahoe and heading to Palisades for a ski day. Sitting in traffic wondering whether you're actually going to find a parking spot? Not quite the same experience.
If you're planning to ski or ride at Palisades Tahoe this winter, figuring out parking before you leave your vacation rental is one of the easiest ways to make your morning go more smoothly.
Palisades Tahoe is continuing its reservation-based parking program for the 2026–27 winter season. The good news is that most parking reservations are still free, and if you're visiting midweek, you usually won't need a reservation at all.
Here's what we'd want a friend visiting Tahoe to know before heading to the mountain.
When Do You Need a Parking Reservation at Palisades Tahoe?
Parking reservations are required at both the Palisades and Alpine base areas on Saturdays, Sundays and designated holiday periods.
For the 2026–27 season, reservations are required on:
December: 5–6, 12–13 and 19–31
January: 1–3, 9–10, 16–18, 23–24 and 30–31
February: 6–7, 13–21 and 27–28
March: 6–7, 13–14, 20–21 and 27–28
April: 3–4 and 10–11
If you're skiing Monday through Friday during a non-holiday period, parking is free and you can simply show up. No reservation is required.
Parking is also free after 1 p.m. on reservation days and does not require a reservation, although spaces are subject to availability.
Local Tip: If your Tahoe trip dates are flexible, we love a midweek Palisades day. You can skip the parking reservation altogether during non-holiday periods, and the mountain generally has a very different feel than it does on a busy Saturday morning.
Free vs. Paid Palisades Tahoe Parking Reservations
The majority of Palisades Tahoe's reservable parking spaces are free.
Free reservations are released on Tuesdays for the upcoming weekend or holiday period. Half are released at 12 p.m. Pacific, with the remaining half released at 7 p.m. Pacific.
For the 2026–27 season, the first free parking reservations are scheduled to be released on December 16.
If you want to have your parking figured out well before your trip, Palisades also offers a limited number of advance paid reservations for $30 per vehicle, per day. Paid reservations for the 2026–27 season became available September 15.
If you're planning a Christmas, New Year's, Presidents' Week or another peak winter trip, the paid option can be worth considering if you'd rather have one less thing to think about the week of your vacation.
Choose Your Base Area Before You Reserve
One detail that's easy to miss: your parking reservation is specific to a base area.
When you reserve, you'll choose either Palisades or Alpine. Your reservation only applies to the base area you selected.
So before you click that final button, make sure your group knows where you actually wants to start the ski day.
Carpooling to Palisades
Have a full car? Palisades considers a carpool to be four or more people in one vehicle.
Carpool vehicles still need a parking reservation on weekends and during holiday periods, so having four people in the car doesn't mean you can simply show up.
For 2026–27, Palisades is offering a $20 resort credit voucher to qualifying Carpool 4+ drivers. Carpool reservations are released beginning at noon on Tuesdays along with an allocation for the upcoming weekend or holiday period.
It's a nice little bonus for doing something we'd recommend anyway — fewer cars heading into Olympic Valley and Alpine makes everyone's ski morning easier.
What If You Don't Get a Parking Reservation?
Don't assume you can drive up and figure it out when you arrive. If reservations are required and you don't have one, Palisades says there isn't a parking space reserved for your vehicle.
Instead, this is when we'd start looking at transportation alternatives.
Depending on where you're staying, options can include TART, Park & Ride service from Truckee or Tahoe City, the Mountaineer on-demand shuttle in Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, or riding with someone in your group who already has a reservation.
You can also keep checking the parking reservation system. Cancellations can make spaces available again, including on the day you plan to ski.
Don't Forget to Cancel If Your Plans Change
Tahoe weather has a way of changing plans.
If you decide not to use your reservation, cancel it so the space can go to someone else. Palisades allows guests to cancel parking reservations until 9 a.m. on the morning of the reservation.
The resort also has penalties for no-shows, so this is one detail we wouldn't forget.
Staying in Olympic Valley? You May Not Need Your Car
This is one of the reasons we love staying close to Palisades.
If your vacation rental is in Olympic Valley, check whether you can use the free Mountaineer on-demand shuttle rather than driving to the mountain. Depending on where you're staying, you may be able to leave the car behind entirely.
There's something pretty great about waking up, grabbing your gear and heading to the mountain without making parking part of the morning at all.
Our Best Advice for a Palisades Ski Day
If we were planning the day ourselves, we'd figure out transportation before we figured out where we're having lunch.
For a weekend ski day, make the parking reservation as soon as your booking window opens. If you have four or more people, look at the Carpool 4+ option. If you're staying somewhere with convenient shuttle access, seriously consider leaving the car behind.
And if your schedule allows for a midweek ski day? Even better.
A little planning ahead can mean less time sitting in traffic and more time actually enjoying the reason you came to Tahoe in the first place.
