There's a reason so many people come back to Lake Tahoe and Truckee summer after summer.
Some days are packed with paddleboarding, kayaking, and hiking. Other days are as simple as spreading out a towel, dipping your toes into crystal-clear water, and watching the afternoon drift by. Around here, beach days don't need much of a plan.
If you're planning a summer vacation in Lake Tahoe or Truckee, these are the beaches we recommend again and again. Each has its own personality, whether you're looking for a lively afternoon, a quiet paddle, or a family-friendly place to spend the day.
Local Tip: If we're heading to the beach, we always try to arrive before 9 a.m. The lake is usually at its calmest, parking is much easier, and the water is unbelievably clear before the afternoon breeze picks up.
1. Commons Beach (Tahoe City)
If you ask us where we'd spend a relaxed summer afternoon, Commons Beach is always near the top of the list.
Located in the heart of Tahoe City, it's easy to pair a beach day with lunch, shopping, or an ice cream stroll through town. The grassy park, sandy shoreline, and calm water make it especially popular with families.
During the summer, Commons Beach also hosts the beloved Concerts at Commons Beach series, where locals and visitors gather for free live music every Sunday evening. Bring a blanket, grab dinner to-go, and enjoy one of the best summer traditions in North Lake Tahoe.
Nearby you'll also find kayak and paddleboard rentals, making it easy to spend the entire day on the water.
2. Kings Beach State Recreation Area
If your vacation home is in Kings Beach, you're only minutes from one of the longest sandy beaches in Lake Tahoe.
Kings Beach has a fun, laid-back atmosphere that makes it perfect for families, groups, or anyone who simply wants to spend the day near the water. Wide sandy beaches, shallow swimming areas, volleyball courts, and nearby restaurants mean there's something for everyone.
Summer visitors shouldn't miss Music on the Beach, a free concert series held every Friday evening. Grab dinner from one of the nearby restaurants, enjoy local beer from Alibi Ale Works, and watch the sun begin to set over the lake.
One of our favorite things about Kings Beach is how easy everything is—you can park once and spend the whole day without ever needing your car.
3. Waterman's Landing (Carnelian Bay)
For anyone wanting to experience Lake Tahoe from the water, Waterman's Landing is hard to beat.
This local favorite combines one of the area's best paddleboard rental shops with a beautiful public beach and cozy lakeside café. Rent a paddleboard, explore Tahoe's famously clear water, or simply relax with a coffee while watching everyone launch onto the lake.
One of the reasons we love Waterman's Landing is that it's dog-friendly. It's one of our favorite places to spend a summer morning with our pups, and one of the few beaches where your four-legged family member can enjoy the lake right alongside you.
If you're looking for something unique, Waterman's also offers SUP yoga classes during the summer.
Local Tip: Even if you aren't planning to paddle, stop by for breakfast and grab a seat overlooking the lake. It's one of our favorite slow mornings in North Lake Tahoe.

5. Sand Harbor Beach
No list of the best beaches in Lake Tahoe would be complete without Sand Harbor.
Famous for its giant granite boulders, impossibly clear turquoise water, and postcard-worthy scenery, Sand Harbor is one of the most photographed beaches in Lake Tahoe.
The state park offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, picnic areas, restrooms, showers, and boat launches. Families especially appreciate the calm swimming coves and shallow shoreline.
Local Tip: During peak summer, day-use reservations are required and often sell out well in advance. If you plan to visit Sand Harbor, make your reservation as early as possible. Even reservations can fill quickly during the busiest weeks of summer, so don't wait until the last minute to plan your beach day.
6. Secret Cove
Looking for something a little more secluded?
Secret Cove is one of Tahoe's hidden gems. Located along the East Shore, this small cove rewards visitors with crystal-clear water, dramatic granite boulders, and some of the most beautiful scenery around the lake.
Getting there does require a short hike down from the parking area, which helps keep the beach quieter than many of Tahoe's more accessible spots. It's worth wearing comfortable shoes and packing only what you don't mind carrying.
It's also worth noting that Secret Cove is clothing-optional, which surprises plenty of first-time visitors. If that doesn't bother you, you'll find one of the most peaceful beaches in the region.
Because of its smaller size and natural setting, we always encourage visitors to pack out everything they bring and help keep this special spot beautiful.
